Three people who ran what prosecutors described as a sex trafficking operation out of San Marcos pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges of pimping, pandering and human trafficking. The investigation found that seven adult women had been exploited and forced to work as prostitutes around California and in other states.
Evans was the leader of the operation, Dumanis said at a news conference held at the Hall of Justice in downtown San Diego. That inter-agency group was started in to combat human trafficking in the county.
Over the course of a year, investigators tracked and uncovered how the operation worked by looking at financial records and communications conducted over social media platforms, email and messaging applications.
The women were forced into the sex trade by force and coercion from Evans and his partners, and dependent on him for money. Evans could face a maximum sentence of 29 years in state prison if convicted of all charges. The women each face up to 24 years if they are convicted. This marks the second time the task force has brought a case this month. The task force is expected to unveil a new awareness campaign about the human trafficking issue later this month.
